When Do I Need to See an Orthopedic Specialist?

Who Is an Orthopedic Specialist?

An orthopedic specialist is a medical professional trained in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. The musculoskeletal system comprises bones, muscles, joints, nerves, tendons, and ligaments. These specialists manage everything from acute injuries like ankle sprains to chronic conditions such as arthritis.

When to See an Orthopedic Specialist

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain that worsens at night and increases with movement, especially accompanied by joint tenderness, may indicate tendonitis. This condition arises from injury, overuse, or age-related loss of elasticity in tendons.

Difficulty Performing Everyday Activities

If joint and bone discomfort prevents simple tasks like walking or climbing stairs, you should consult a specialist rather than accepting decreased mobility.

Chronic Pain

Pain lasting more than three months warrants professional evaluation from an orthopedic expert.

Limited Range of Motion

Increasingly tight joints that restrict movement may signal arthritis and should be assessed to prevent progression.

Other Warning Signs

  • Numb or tingling hands
  • Swollen joints
  • Pain from repetitive motions
  • Bruised, stiff, or weak muscles
  • Soft tissue injury not improving within two days
  • Instability while standing or walking
