Finding and Caring for the Severed Finger
If you experience a complete amputation, search for the severed digit. Once located:
- Gently rinse it with water or sterile saline solution without scrubbing
- Cover the digit in damp gauze
- Place it in a clean, waterproof bag
- Put that bag into a larger plastic bag packed with ice
- Reach an emergency room or specialist hand doctor immediately
When multiple digits are lost, “place each into their own clean, waterproof bag as this will prevent further damage from occurring and minimize the risk of infection.”
Important: Do not place severed fingers directly on ice or frozen surfaces, as direct contact causes damage.
Caring for Your Hand and Damaged Retained Fingers
Clean the affected area: Run cool freshwater over the wound to remove debris. Leave any lodged objects for professionals to remove. Apply a sterile dressing and compress any bleeding.
Elevate the hand: Raise your hand and arm to help stem blood loss.
Get professional help quickly: “There is a chance that your finger may be able to be reattached, but this is dependent on you getting the right professional help as soon as possible.” Successful reattachment typically requires surgery followed by physical therapy.
