Upper Extremity Surgery: What Can It Repair?

Treating Extremity Injuries

The extent of trauma determines necessary treatment. Surgeons conduct patient evaluations to identify procedures yielding optimal outcomes. Complex cases may require a multidisciplinary approach that involves several specialists, such as orthopedic, plastic, and vascular surgeons. While limb salvage is prioritized, amputation may become necessary in severe cases.

Wrist and Hand Surgery

Hand and wrist surgery commonly addresses severe carpal tunnel syndrome. Surgeons release the carpal ligament to relieve pressure on the median nerve. Using less-invasive arthroscopic surgery causes less trauma to the hand tissues than traditional open surgery.

Elbow Surgery

Surgeons repair elbow fractures, remove scar tissue, treat torn ligaments, and remove bone spurs. Procedures address tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, pitcher’s elbow, and severe arthritis through tendon repair and reattachment.

Surgery of the Shoulder

Shoulder surgery repairs the joint capsule and rotator cuff, the muscles and tendons stabilizing the arm bone in the shoulder socket. The labrum, a fibrous stabilizing tissue, frequently requires repair when torn, as these injuries cause significant pain.

Types of Surgical Procedures

Treatment options include traditional open surgery with large incisions and minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery using smaller incisions. Injury severity determines the most appropriate procedure for each patient.
