Overuse Injuries
Athletes commonly experience hand joint pain from repetitive movements. Sports like tennis, golf, and baseball place particular strain on hand structures. “Tendonitis is one of the most prevalent overuse injuries” where inflammation develops in hand tendons, causing discomfort. Carpal tunnel syndrome also results from repeated stress, compressing the median nerve and producing pain, numbness, and weakness.
Trauma
Direct impact and falls represent another significant source of hand injury in sports. Basketball, football, and martial arts carry elevated trauma risks. Hand fractures range from minor to severe, affecting any of the hand’s bones. Dislocations occur when bones shift from their normal positions and typically require medical intervention.
Arthritis
Osteoarthritis affects hand joints when protective cartilage degenerates. Athletes engaged in grasping and twisting movements face increased vulnerability to developing this condition, which causes “joint pain, stiffness, and swelling.”
Infections
Septic arthritis occurs when bacteria or viruses invade a joint, causing inflammation and pain. Close-contact sports elevate infection risk, and this condition demands prompt medical treatment.
Prevention and Treatment
Proper training, strength exercises, flexibility work, and protective equipment like wrist braces minimize injury risk. Medical evaluation is essential for diagnosis, with treatment ranging from rest and ice to physical therapy or surgery when necessary.
