Endoscopic surgery vs. ‘open’ surgery
Traditionally, carpal tunnel syndrome patients requiring surgery faced highly invasive procedures involving large wrist incisions. Modern endoscopic techniques now provide an alternative approach.
The primary goal of any carpal tunnel release is to sever the carpal tunnel sheath, reducing pressure on the median nerve. Conventional open surgery leaves significant scarring and requires months of recovery, with patients often experiencing residual stiffness and strength loss.
Endoscopic procedures use a single small incision for inserting an endoscope, “a long, flexible tube containing a light and camera”, with tiny cutting tools inserted through another small opening.
