How Does Carpal Tunnel Affect your Hands?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition affecting the hands and wrists, caused by compression of a narrow channel running from the forearm into the wrist. The carpal tunnel contains the median nerve, which “delivers messages between the central nervous system and wrist and hands”, along with nine tendons.

The extent and nature of how CTS affects each person varies, but typical symptoms include:

  • A tingling sensation in fingers, hands, and wrists
  • Hand numbness
  • Wrist and hand pain that may radiate up the arm, often described as a dull ache. Pain frequently worsens at night and can be severe enough to disturb sleep
  • Weakness in the fingers, hand, and wrist, which can significantly impact daily function, from lifting objects to gripping writing instruments or using a computer mouse

Some patients experience constant symptoms, while others notice fluctuating severity, creating unpredictability.

Am I at Risk of Developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Though anyone can develop CTS, women between 40 and 60 experience it most commonly. Risk factors include:

  • Repetitive job or recreational activities
  • Obesity
  • A smaller-than-normal carpal tunnel
  • Certain health conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism, and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Previous hand or wrist injury
