Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects millions of Americans and develops from repetitive strain that causes swelling and inflammation. “When this swelling affects the wrist or hand, it can cause the carpal tunnel, a narrow passageway containing a key nerve serving the hand, to become compressed.” Symptoms include tingling, numbness, weakness, and discomfort.
When Surgery Becomes Necessary
CTS typically progresses slowly, and many patients manage symptoms through medication, anti-inflammatory treatments, wrist supports, and physical therapy. However, surgery may be considered when conservative approaches stop working effectively.
A rare exception occurs with sudden-onset, acute CTS resulting from injury or infection, in these cases, prompt surgery is usually the only effective treatment option.
Types of Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery
Two surgical approaches exist:
- Open surgery: Requires a larger wrist incision; involves four to six months recovery time
- Endoscopic surgery: Uses multiple small incisions and a thin camera for visualization; healing occurs in four to eight weeks with minimal scarring
Both procedures aim to “sever the carpal tunnel passageway to release pressure on the median nerve” and reattach it with increased space to prevent recompression.
