At What Age Can You Develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

A disorder resulting from pressure in the median nerve, which provides sensation to the wrist, hand, and forearm. The nerve travels through a passageway called the carpal tunnel, typically affecting the wrists and hands of one or both sides.

Symptoms include:

  • Pain and burning sensation in the arms
  • Hand muscle weakness
  • Numbness and tingling in the thumb
  • Wrist pain

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Compression of the median nerve can stem from underlying medical conditions:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Obesity

Who Develops This Condition?

Women face higher risk due to smaller carpal tunnel anatomy. Pregnancy and menopause increase vulnerability through hormonal changes and fluid accumulation.

“Most people develop the condition between the age of 30 and 60.” Age-related risk increases over time, with onset before 20 being “very rare and unusual.”

Occupational factors matter, construction, keyboarding, and manufacturing involve repetitive wrist strain. Lifestyle habits like smoking and high salt intake also elevate risk.

Treatment and Prevention

Treatment varies by severity, ranging from wrist splints and anti-inflammatory medication to surgical intervention that reduces median nerve compression.

Prevention involves avoiding strenuous wrist activities, addressing underlying conditions, lifestyle modifications, and regular physical exercise.
